E-BOOK : SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION - PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

This book grew out of a course that I began teaching at Indiana University in the
late 1990s, and I wish to thank my students from that time to the present, whose
input has been critical in developing many of the ideas expressed in these pages.
In the fall of 2006 I was invited by Dr. Pavlos Kanaroglou to spend part of a
sabbatical leave at McMaster University’s Centre for Spatial Analysis in Hamilton,
Ontario. In addition to being an excellent research institute, the Centre and the
Department of Geography have a very good program in sustainable transportation.
Their research journal collection was also of tremendous value.
Prior to that sabbatical, I was involved in a 6-year National Science Foundation–European
Commission project to increase research interaction between U.S., Canadian,
and European sustainable transportation researchers. The benefit of interaction
with scholars involved in that effort, including Tom Leinbach, Cristina Capineri,
Don Janelle, Andy Gillespie, Martin Lee Gosselin, Veli Himanen, Roger Stough, Piet
Rietveld, Kieran Donaghy, Georg Rudinger, and Peter Nijkamp, is also ingrained in
the book in many subtle ways.
I am also grateful for the support of The Guilford Press staff. Kristal Hawkins,
Acquisitions Editor, and her anonymous reviewers have helped in shaping the content
of the book. Louise Farkas, Senior Production Editor, and her staff have done
much to improve how the book reads.
In spite of all this assistance, I may have left out your favorite program, policy,
or technology. This is one of the problems of working in a field as dynamic as sustainable
transportation: Everything cannot be included. For any exclusions, oversights,
or errors—which I hope are very few—I am solely responsible.
